Carnation of the Upper Fourth was originally published by RTS in 1934. In 1958 it was reprinted by Lutterworth Press - and the text was literally cut by half. So, if you have the Lutterworth edition, you only have half the story!
Carnation had never been to school before but ‘her efficiency at games, her enthusiasm with the Guides, and her naturally sweet nature soon made her a favourite’. Naturally, though, her path is not all smooth.
Ruth Jolly has written an introduction on the book which will focus on EBD characters who have to spend time looking after a parent or guardian.
This is one of the best of EBD’s ‘singleton’ titles.
