A 'Fun in the Fourth' title (click here for more details)
Evelyn Finds Herself is among the top ten of girls' school stories, deserving recognition as 'literature' rather than 'school story', and is essential reading for anyone interested in the development of the genre.
Clare Mallory, no mean judge, dedicated Juliet Overseas to Josephine Elder as 'author of the best girls' school story I know: Evelyn Finds Herself'.

The book follows Evelyn through the second half of her schooldays, tracing her growth as an individual rather than as one of a pair with her friend Elizabeth or as the follower of an inspiring teacher, with all the incidents (and there are plenty of them) subtly related to Evelyn's development.
The background is, unusually, that of a Girls' Public Day School, and is clearly based on Josephine Elder's own education at Croydon High School.
Reviews
- This is just to let you know how impressed I am with your edition of this title.
- The various explanations by other authors are very interesting and add a great deal to the re-publication. I am amazed to find that the whole story does not appear to have dated very much, but this may be because I went to the same school and am now nearly 70.
- Anyway, thank you again and best wishes for your future publishing programme.
