The Players and the Rebels - cover

Published: July 2008

In The Players and the Rebels Antonia Forest continues the story of Nicholas Marlow, the eponymous hero of The Player’s Boy, who ran away from Trennels at the age of ten and after various adventures became ‘boy’ to a player named William Shakespeare.

Rebels, like Boy, is a fascinating read not just for the light it sheds on the background to the 20th-century Marlows but also for its portrayal of life - especially theatrical life - in late-Elizabethan London.

This Girls Gone By edition contains new introductory essays by Hilary Clare and Joy Wotton, both Antonia Forest specialists, as well as revised versions of the preliminary material from The Player’s Boy for the benefit of those who may not have bought GGBP’s edition of that title.

The original editions of both books were never reprinted and are therefore very hard to find on the second-hand market, so - like its predecessor - The Players and the Rebels is expected to sell out quickly.
