Player's Boy - cover

Published: 2006

If we were to analyse all our e-mails, the thing that people ask more than anything else is, 'When are you going to publish Antonia Forest 's two historical novels?'

We are thus delighted to be announce that our edition of The Player's Boy will be published in time for the Antonia Forest Conference at the end of June.

Connected to the Marlows' books by ancestry, The Player's Boy is set during the 1590s and gives a fascinating and accurate account of life during the age of the first Queen Elizabeth.

There will be three introductory articles:

Hilary Clare is writing a general historical introduction; Joy Wotton is writing an illustrated guide to the locations, which will be illustrated by Virgina Preston; Sue Sims is writing about the Shakespearean background to the book.

All of these writers are not only experts on Antonia Forest (Sue Sims knew her well and is her literary executor) but also know a great deal about their subject matter, so these introductory pieces will add much to the book.

Reviews

  • I really enjoyed the introductory material in The Player's Boy, especially Joy and Nicky's walk around Nicholas Marlow's London. As a colonial who has never been to England it made the locations and scenes so clear. Congratulations on another beautifully presented book!

  • I wanted to say thanks for publishing The Player's Boy. I enjoyed it so much, and so much more than I had expected to. I usually skip over the diary entries in the modern books and ordered this more for the sake of completeness. I now plan to reread RMF, Cricket term and Attic term just to read those references to see how Geoffrey Marlow perceived the happenings.
  • Antonia Forest's distinctive writing style shines through and I found the world of Nicholas Marlow so fascinating. I had thought that I had had all Antonia Forest had to offer when I completed my modern Marlow set but now I have The Players and the Rebels to look forward to, and of course The Marlows and their Maker.
