Although Sister of the Angels was first published in 1939, three years before Henrietta’s House, it is its sequel, and is a very special Christmas story, also about Henrietta, and also set in Torminster (Wells) at the turn of the 20th Century.
Hugh Anthony is there, Canon and Mrs Fordyce, and all the Cathedral characters whom we met in Henrietta’s House. But above all Henrietta’s father reappears, to spend time with Henrietta, bringing that air of mystery about him, and then there is the artist Fra Angelico in the Cathedral … The snow, the preparations for Christmas, the carol service, and then ‘the Christmas bells began to ring’.
The book is illustrated with enchanting line drawings by C Walter Hodges.
Clarissa Cridland has written an article on Wells Cathedral, historically and also at the time of Torminster Cathedral in 1900, as well as today.
Sister of the Angels was published on 25 November 2014.
