CS No 22
It is the Christmas Term, and is the School’s second term on the Island. Peggy Bettany is excited about the coming term, her first in the Sixth. While traveling to school, with Bride, Maeve and two new girls, Polly and Lala Winterton, who have come to live near the Bettanys, they have to change trains. Peggy and the others get on the wrong train, resulting in their arrival at school a day late, having spent the night with a long-lost cousin of Miss Annersley. Much to her surprise, upon Peggy’s arrival at school, she learns that she has been selected as the new Head Girl. Peggy’s peers are delighted with her appointment as Head Girl and rally around to support her, with the exception of one of the Special Sixth, Eilunedd Vaughn. Joey Maynard is living on the mainland and teaching history this term, and much as the girls love her, she turns up at odd hours. But it is she who helps with Eilunedd.
