GC At School with the Stanhopes
£13.00
First published by GGBP in 2004, At School with the Stanhopes has been chosen as our new Gwendoline Courtney title for this year.
Sixteen year old Rosalind finds herself stranded because her late guardian has not made provision for her future, and she has to leave her beloved school and live with her dour elder brother Richard, and his general factotum, Henry—who hates girls. Kate Stanhope, a youthful mistress who taught Rosalind at her public school, inherits a large house in the village and comes to live in it with her four lively young sisters. They turn the house into a school, attended by Rosalind—which has shattering effects on brother Richard’s peaceful ways.
This is one of Gwendoline Courtney’s best books.
We have two introductory articles. Samantha Little has written on ‘Inspiring British Values’ – a look at Gwendoline Courtney’s wartime work and its setting. Georgia Corrick’s article, ‘A Warm Sort of Glow’ looks at the emotional reactions in At School with the Stanhopes.
At School with the Stanhopes will be published in July / August. 10 June the book is being typeset now.
